Asia’s Oldest Elephant, Vatsala, Passes Away at Over 100 in Panna Tiger Reserve

In a heartfelt moment that marks the end of an era, Vatsala, believed to be Asia’s oldest living elephant, passed away at the Panna Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh on July 8, 2025. At over 100 years old, Vatsala was more than just an elephant—she was a symbol of resilience, wisdom, and deep human-animal connection.

Born in Kerala and later brought to Madhya Pradesh in the 1970s, Vatsala spent decades as a gentle matriarch, nurturing calves, aiding forest staff in tiger tracking, and becoming an inseparable part of the region’s wildlife legacy. Despite being blind and suffering from age-related ailments, she received daily care from dedicated veterinarians—bathing, warm porridge, and a quiet place to rest.

Her final moments were spent peacefully near the Hinauta Elephant Camp, surrounded by her caretakers who treated her like family. Forest staff and state officials paid emotional tributes, with Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister calling her the “silent guardian of our forests.”

Vatsala’s passing is not just the loss of an elephant—it is the farewell to a living legend whose life journey spanned a century of forest stories, conservation triumphs, and unmatched companionship.
